Singapore is my kind of city. I may even give up chewing gum for it, especially if I can eat this on regular basis:

S, a friend from grad school, heads the voice department at a conservatory in Singapore. When he heard that I was planning to be in town, he offered me to teach a masterclass and sing a recital. (Disclosure: I’m a professional singer.) Who am I to say no? H, another friend who was also my next door neighbor in NY, lives in Singapore with her husband and a cutie-pie son. I hadn’t seen her in a dozen years! After months of yoga-ing then solo-traveling, I was psyched at the opportunity to see my friends and sing some oldies. Oh, and stuff my face.

The visit did not disappoint. I had a great time.

Jakarta, of course, is a different place. VERY different. I performed in Jakarta twice before this visit, and made a number of good friends. I stopped by on my way to Bali and stayed at D’s lovely place. The city is a vast, polluted, unruly, confusing parking lot. The public transportation here only adds to more traffic. There appears to be no logic to the government’s efforts to solve the problem.

But I still enjoy the place. I’ve worked with some lovely and amazing people here. It was nice to see Salihara (a truly cool arts center) blossom into a place where creativity, discussion and youthful energy mingle. I hope to return and play some fun music.

I have to mention that the national museum in Jakarta is a super interesting place. It’s hard to find (a fellow backpacker told me her taxi driver didn’t know the location) and the government does an embarrassing job of promoting it. In traffic- and shopping mall-filled Jakarta, the museum was a rare find. D and I couldn’t believe how empty it was and we thought the treasures inside deserved to be seen by many.

My friends in Singapore and Jakarta treated me with so much warmth and generosity. I ate amazing food and delighted in catching up. A conversation that went beyond “where are you from?” and “what hostel would you reccommend?” was a nice bonus.

On to Bali.

Food! Food! Awesomeness! Food!

That pretty much describes this portion of the trip.

The B&B in Siem Reap arranged the bus across the border from Cambodia to Thailand and into Bangkok city center. The bus (a van, really) was a bit crowded but super-convenient since the operator guided us through the border. So as soon as I checked in at my hostel in Sukhumvit area of Bangkok, I busted out to stuff myself with some street food.

Behold the papaya salad with salty pickled crab.

That was only one of 3 entrees I devoured for dinner that night. It moved me to tears and runny nose for so many reasons.

The next day, I met up with B, a fellow yogi I met in Mysore. We started by heading straight to a lovely health spa for some much needed Thai massage. (B, seriously, thank you!) Then we ate, a lot, at an awesome place in the Siam neighborhood and drove around Bangkok. B totally treated me to all the day’s activities. This pattern repeated with other friends in Singapore and Jakarta later on the trip. To say the least, I am entirely grateful to have such generous friends. Come to NY, my friends! I shall gladly be responsible for your weight gain. Thank you!

I tried some sightseeing the following day but kept getting distracted by food everywhere I went. Oh, well…

I took an overnight bus to Chiang Mai – by far one of my favorite destinations. I stayed at a lovely hostel called Baan Nud-Kun. Nice, clean place with a pretty garden and super helpful owner/staff. Chiang Mai is a major tourist destination, but not a tourist trap (which parts of Bali totally is, but more on that in a later post). The staff at the hostel booked cooking classes and tours for me, and even steered me to a nice local spa staffed by former female prisoners. These women have a very difficult time getting back on their feet after leaving prison. A head of the local women’s prison started a job training program and the spa to help them. The place is called Lila Spa. I had a couple of lovely massages there. Yes, I’m recommending it.

Chiang Mai is full of activities. I took a cooking course (spicy food, anyone?), shopped (I tried to hold back…really), and visited an elephant hospital.

The elephant hospital was a real treat. The Elephant Nature Park, run by Khun Lek, is a sanctuary for abused and sick elephants. It’s been featured in several documentaries on Discovery Channel, National Geographic and others. There, the elephants don’t give you rides and do tricks. Visitors and long-term volunteers learn about their lives, individual stories, Thailand’s policy toward them and conservation efforts. I got to observe them, feed them, and help bathe them. Needless to say, it was an incredible experience. I hope to return and volunteer there. If you or your friends have veterinary training, the sanctuary is looking for help. Go!

Now, some pictures of…er, food in Chiang Mai.

It’s been ages since I left India. I’ve zipped through Mumbai, Kuala Lumpur, Siem Reap, Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Singapore and Jakarta. Lots of events and lovely experiences. I’ll divide it into a couple of posts. So let’s start with leaving India.

The taxi ride to the Mumbai airport was the most hair-raising thing ever. I almost lost my fabulous lunch from the fabulous Indigo. While in India, I’ve taken rides on mopeds, motorcycles, rickshaws, taxis, buses, trains, airplanes and boats (no, no cows). Nothing prepared me for a little taxi with a driver who mumbled/sang through the entire 1 hour drive, weaving in an out of crazy Mumbai evening traffic as fast as his car could go. What I hadn’t yet experienced until this ride was Indian-driving at HIGH SPEED. I definitely have more gray hair now.

The immigrations officer at the departure gate asked with a big smile, “So you studied yoga? You are a yogini now. When are you coming back?” I know he meant if I were coming back through India before my visa expired, but at the same time, I thought he was asking when I would return to India for more yoga. With tears welling up in my eyes and a lump in my throat, I told him, “March 1st. And hopefully very, very soon.”

You know, I used to live in Italy and France. There, cows were for eating. Showers were hot with skin-peeling water pressure. I had lovers, and drank divine wine. I certainly did not get up well before sunrise to get ready for 2 torturous hours of Ashtanga yoga followed by chanting in some ancient language. But neither Italy nor France made me cry upon facing departure.

Then came a day of major culture shock, stuffing my face, extravagant pedicure and more stuffing my face in Kuala Lumpur.

After spending a horrifyingly boring, sleepless and uncomfortable night in the Low Cost Carrier Terminal in Kuala Lumpur – Thanks, Air Asia, for enabling my backpacking trip jetset-style! You’re cheap, and I love you for that. – I finally arrived in Siem Reap, Cambodia. With one thing in mind: temples, temples, temples. Ever since I read about the ruins here in a magazine as a little kid, I’ve always wanted to see the temples of Angkor. The surprise is that I like the tourist holding tank of a town – Siem Reap. The main center is pretty much a tourist trap-hole as expected. But it’s still charming. On the way from the airport, I saw cows, chickens and dogs hanging out in the field and town, just as I like it in towns and cities! There aren’t any concrete phalluses blocking my sunlight like Kuala Lumpur or NYC!

And the temples…

I was there over the Chinese new year. The temples were overtaken by tourists from China and Korea and their huge buses. At Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom, it didn’t matter so much because the place is so huge and overwhelmingly amazing. But in smaller temples, it was a bit crowded. It definitely helped that my B&B (the amazing Golden Mango Inn) arranged for a rickshaw (tuk-tuk in SE Asia) driver to take me everywhere. The average cost for each day? Less than $20 including tip. For 3 days straight, I went temple-ing from sunrise to sunset with a guidebook or an official guide. For a culture-geek like me, it was heaven.

Last day in Pune, I headed to Aga Khan’s palace where Gandhi was interned by the Brits after his “Quit India” resolution. Quiet an beautiful grounds. Practically empty. Rickshaw drivers didn’t know it as the Gandhi Memorial, only as the palace! Gandhi lost his wife and his secretary during the internment. The memorial on the palace grounds contain their ashes. I wasn’t prepared to be so touched by the fading and tattered displays. I was quite moved. Tears-in-the-eyes moved.

I’ve been traveling in 2nd class unreserved cars ever since Dev bought me a ticket on it. Kinda like the NYC subway during rush hour except with water, tea, coffee, snack and sometimes idly(!) vendors. I like it. Pune-Mumbai ticket cost me 52 rupees, FAR cheaper than going from Columbia University to Lincoln Center by subway. I see all kinds of people on these rides.

City of Mumbai was a sight of horrendous terrorism not so long ago, like NYC. It’s a grand, bustling, polluted, swaggering, beautiful, filthy, filthy-rich, dirt-poor, fantastic city. Check this guy sharpening knives:

I wandered around Colaba, Fort and Churchgate areas. I also visited Mani Bhavan, Gandhi’s residence during his Mumbai days pre-”Quit India.” I didn’t plan on doing a Gandhi pilgrimage – I left Mysore with absolutely no plans – but my feet led me there. Again, I found the place so strangely moving and humbling. Maybe it’s because I’m alone on the road, took on this big break in the middle of what should be the height of productive adulthood trying to figure out what the hell I’m doing with my life. I don’t have any answers. I may go back to the same routine of a corporate day job and a musical night job, yet my attitude will be decidely different. It won’t be a complaint-filled grind. I can’t quite pinpoint the change, but I won’t be able to look at many things the same way.

Before leaving Mumbai (and India), I took a ferry out to the Elephanta Island. Murky soupy Mumbai Bay blending right into murky soupy Mumbai atmosphere. All pollution all the time. I’m suffering from an upper respiratory tract infection developed in Pune and in full bloom in Mumbai. Concert in a bit over 2 weeks. Perfect. The caves which are World Heritage sites were beautiful.

It definitely whet my appetite for some serious temple sight-seeing. Guess where I’m headed to after Mumbai?

The temples of Angkor, Cambodia!

I dealt with the bus cancellation very calmly. Considering there’s only one bus a day from Mysore to Goa and I had a non-refundable hotel reservation in Benaulim, Goa. Weird connecting schedule meant that flying out of Mysore would take 2 additional days! Dev’s brother took me to the bus station for a refund which by the way doesn’t include taxes and fees. I crashed at E & C’s – thank you! – and got Dev to pick me up before sunrise to the train station. I took a train to Bangalore (2nd class unreserved seat on a post-strike-packed train), a Bangalore city bus to the airport, a flight to Goa and a taxi to Benaulim. The hotel was on the beach without a car-friendly path, so I walked the last bit to paradise. Everything was going so smoothly that I made a prediction for the Jets to beat the Steelers to reach The Game. Alas, I don’t make a very good fortune teller.

There’s not much to say about South Goa except…

I did discover that small towns in Goa lack fast wifi & Skype set-up in their Internet cafes.

After a few days, I took a 12+ hour overnight bus to Pune. The bus left early!

Seen on/from this bus:

A flying cockroach roaming freely about;

A Bollywood sexy political action thriller comedy musical miraculously devoid of any coherent plot, semi-competent direction or any passable acting, say, beyond junior high talent show;

Sliding windows postioned low enough for a sleepy passenger to fall out of (This wouldn’t have been a problem if the windows properly closed and locked, but they didn’t. The one next to me slid open every time the bus turned which was exceedingly often.)

Another bus or truck passing inches away from my face – in either direction, frequently

Crazy Indian roads. No discernable traffic lanes. No street lights. No shoulders or sidewalks. Semi-paved roads, as if someone dumped some asphalt and forgot to finish the job. Impossibly overloaded trucks and motorcycles playing chicken.

Dark, dark, DARK countryside and mountains.

And stars. Glorious streaks of twinkling dots in the sky. Jackson Pollack went crazy with the Bedazzler on a black canvas. Heart-stoppingly beautiful.

When I arrived in Pune at 6 am, still totally dark, rickshaw drivers swarmed around me. 100 rupees to Koregaon Park, they said. Ha!! I said. First of all, why don’t you put on the meter so we can see how much it really costs? The price immediately dropped to 50 rupees. Oh, but still 100 because of night charge. Er, sorry but night charges don’t double the fare and the morning rush hour is 30 minutes away. Night charge?! Secondly, I’m not going to Koregaon Park, the supreme backpacker central where Osho, the famous sex guru, opened the Osho Meditation Resort. I’m going to a prim and proper business hotel where I will pretend to be a guest so I can use their clean washroom that’s even got toilet paper! I walked away from the station and found myself a rickshaw for 50 rupees to a prim and proper business hotel…in Koregaon Park.

Did I mention I survived for 15 hours without going to the toilet?

I hung out in Koregaon area until near noon and headed to my hotel closer to the Iyengar Institute west of the city center. Air conditioning! Hot water! Rain shower! Disinfected toilet! Toilet paper! Western mattress! Clean sheets! WIFI!!! I did my best to clean up my backpacker grime, put on my best kurta and churidar, bought a bouquet of 20 red roses, and hopped on a rickshaw.

I got to the Iyengar institute an hour too early, so waited by the gate for the evening office hour. There was a bit of who are you why are you here as expected – I don’t study there, and Pune was a fatal terrorist target a short while back. A couple of people in the lobby area looked at me as if I’m a crazy, clueless groupie which is a keen observation for I indeed am. His secretary said no photos which I wouldn’t have dared out of respect for him and for myself! I was led downstairs to the office. A bunch of people were sitting and working around a big table. The secretary lady then immediately got down on the floor and bowed to my left side. There he was. B.K.S. Iyengar. I dropped to my knees, bowed my head to the floor, and place the flowers on his desk. I was super star-struck so I couldn’t open my mouth. Mind you, I live in Manhattan where the natives are too cool for celebs. I work with a number of people I’ve read about in my music history textbooks back in school. But this was different. He wrote “Light on Yoga” – THE bible of the asana world! One of a handful of remaining direct lineages of Krishnamacharya!! It’s a miracle I didnt soil my churidar. Man, he looked great. He looks exactly like he does on the cover of Kofi Busia’s book on him, with flowing silver hair and smiling firey eyes. He smiled and nodded, I smiled and nodded, then I quietly walked out.

Considering that I half expected someone to snatch the flowers and kick my ass out on the curb, I was delighted. Not oh-my-god-that’s-B.K.S.-jump-up-and-down delighted. But simply delighted.

Saturday, January 22, my 15 hour bus ride from Mysore to Goa was abruptly canceled. A general strike called by the Indian opposition party BJP to protest the corruption charges against its minister. No, not to improve the lives of so many Indians living in dire poverty. They called it just because they’re upset. Argh! I was supposed to get to this place below:

R went back to Hong Kong shortly after new year. Almost everyone from November and December left and the Shala was full of new faces. It was incredibly disorienting. Saraswati’s students were pushed back to start after 8:30 because Sharath’s Mysore sessions were so full. (It’ll continue so until March.) By then, I was practicing almost the entire primary series, and with my practice being generally slow paced, I couldn’t finish almost until 11 am. I had to choose between shower, breakfast an chanting. Guess which one I chose.

Organizing my trip out of Mysore was getting a bit stressful. I mailed most of my personal stuff home and concert clothes to Singapore so that I can travel with a tiny backpack. Mailing package out of India is a trip. Everything must be wrapped in white cloth and sewn up! I had to pay someone to do this. I swear this is some kind of a racket amongst the Indian government, the tailors and the linen producers. Trying to book Air Asia flights online was a bit complicated as well. Initially my credit cards were rejected due to security concerns on the card providers’ part (why would Bo want to go to Cambodia and Thailand?) despite my pre-departure notification to them. Then the Air Asia website kept crashing. Then there were restrictions on flights in and out of Indonesia. Whatever. I forgive them. They are so unbelievably cheap I am willing to overlook pretty much anything.

A couple of delightful events happened in January. A. G. Mohan, one of Krishnamacharya’s students from the big guruji’s Chennai days, came and spoke to us. Let’s just say a whole bunch of us (me included) were tempted to follow him to Chennai. Wow. The depth and breadth of knowledge in that man’s head is mind-boggling. We were so grateful to Sharath for inviting him and giving us a chance to meet him. So amazing. He wrote a book about his time with Krishnamacharya. Check it out on www.svastha.com. Krishnamacharya: His Life and Teachings, published by Shambhala.

D from the Bay Area and D from Australia along with a bunch of people oranized another fundraiser for the local children’s homes, and I got to sing a bit. Bay Area D who’s a folk singer and I even did a duet. A from South Africa played the guitar for us. L from Sweden played some cool stuff on the harmonium as well. We had a full house at Anokhi Garden and raised some good money for the charities. I had a grand time. Yoga and singing…

I felt torn about leaving. I was about to embark on a glorious journey through Southeast Asia, yet I just wanted to stay and just practice. Mysore had become a home. I understand why people return year after year with no expectation for teaching authorization. I couldn’t stop fretting about rearranging my life in order to return. Then I thought, I don’t have a job, insurance, a house, a partner in life, kids (tick tock). I felt that my life was stunted. I had been following the shooting in Tucson in the news. How survivors cope. How families mourn. Political retoric won’t change much. I hope people don’t lose empathy. I don’t want to be a selfish a-hole. I don’t want to leave everything to fate. That’s a cop-out. Yogic karma? No. Be a good human being. Help others. Don’t get caught up in a naval-gazing self-indulgence, but try to be the best human being I can be. An existential crisis. A premature mid-life crisis. Yikes.

Speaking of best humans, mysore’s got Dev and Raju, two of the best autoriksha drivers. I thank Raju for his quiet kindness – taking me all over Mysore in search of an honest deal on a bed when I desperately needed one, refusing to charge us when we took Spotty to the vet. I thank Dev for watching out for me, honest and hard working, never ripping me off like some drivers, sharing his stories and treating me as a friend. Dev notified me about the strike and bus cancellation and helped me get a refund for the ticket. He made sure I got to where I needed to go in order to get to Goa. If you are headed to Mysore, these are your guys. Call them. Here are their numbers.

Dev: +91 99-00-124784
Raju: +91 99-45-781297

I had gotten used to riding helmet-less on back of friends’ scooter swerving in and out of traffic in Mysore. The first time for 5 min on Gokulam suburban road I was scared enough to lose my breakfast – almost. Then I resigned to it as I’ve resigned to the fact that my laundry will never be truly clean in India. On my last day (before finding out about the strike) Aussie D took me crazy-swerving in and out of the downtown traffic to see the elephants at an Ashram.

I love Mysore.

Late in the afternoon on 1/1/11, I went to look for Spotty who’s been hanging out elsewhere after all her babies had been taken away by various locals. I wanted to give her a happy-new-year treat.

I found her with a new boyfriend with a broken hind leg and another friend with a broken front leg. I fed all three of them doggie treats and milk.

I noticed Spotty sporting a wound on her left side. Fight? Scooter? I could see the exposed red flesh, fur and skin torn away. And the infection from giving birth had gotten worse.

After eating she laid down in front of the gate. I scratched her head. She had a fever and was shaking. She didn’t look too good. I got angry for so many reasons (long psycho-babble) and started crying. My neighbors C & E came home and found the sad two of us. C called a local vet and we took Spotty in a rickshaw. E picked her up and she didn’t even growl or bite, she was just scared and sick. The vet gave her a shot for the old infection (turns out to be a tumor), ointment for the new wound, and we got some meds for her.

We tied her to the gate inside the yard while waiting for our landlord’s permission to keep her for a few days to administer her meds. Ah, but Spotty is a free spirit; she cannot be tied down! She somehow wiggled herself out of the collar and bolted.

On subsequent days, I went looking for her morning and evening to give her meds. She refused the milk method and wasted almost half of the antibiotic. Well, she couldn’t resist one thing – fried chicken wings with tandori spices! I bought some from a street vendor and hid the pill inside. She gulped it down without even a consideration for chewing. Yes!

Happy new year, Spotty!

A week later, she was hanging with a new boyfriend- that tramp! – this time, one with some sort of facial imbalance, crooked ears and jaw. She has an ecclectic taste… Of course, I fed him, too. What was I supposed to do? Lecture her about Brahmacharya? Spotty and her friends bark madly at all the overfed and underexercised Gokulam pets, and chase any stranger dogs off their turf. Every morning she comes to the gate of my place, lies down and waits for me to feed her. She won’t even lift her head any more. I hand-feed a street dog! She then rolls belly up so I can scratch her saggy boobies, er, belly. One time, upon seeing me, she wagged her tail so hard she lost her balance and fell. So, of course, I oblige and scratch her boobies.

The second visit to the vet was just as traumatic for her. She needs to return weekly for the shots to reduce her tumor. E helped to hold her so she couldn’t jump out of a moving rickshaw. (You know, people say Canadians are nice. In E’s and C’s case, that’s an understatement.) When we returned to our street, I took off her leash and she scrambled out of the rickshaw as quickly as canine-ly possible. She ran up the street, then turned to look at me resentfully, probably cursing me. I was sure she’d never want to see me again. But a couple of hours later, there she was following me down the road to the Shala. She laid down smack in the middle of the road (traffic be damned) to have her boobies scratched.

I think I’m in love.

Mysore is a surreal place and I like it that way.

I was on a mission to find a working, tuned(!) piano in Mysore to prepare for an upcoming gig. For over a month, I searched and searched. I asked everyone I know in Gokulam if they knew anyone with a piano. The closest I got was a piano missing the entire keyboard sitting in the lobby of a local hotel and an electric piano at a private English school whose director never got back to my request to see it. In Mysore, classical music means wooden flute, tabla and sitar. Not piano, cello and clarinet.

Vivian (of the yoga students’ breakfast hangout) told me I could borrow her daughter’s toy keyboard. Four octaves and perma-tuned. Sold! Thank you Vivian for rescuing me from practicing on the miniscule keyboard of my iPhone app.

Meanwhile, the story of my search for a piano spread, and several curious yogis started asking. Voice lesson? Holiday caroling?

J from Germany became a regular voice student and C from the US came for a consultation. Ann from Santosha (another breakfast favorite) asked me to join a small Christmas caroling concert with a couple of other musician yogis. I printed & copied a bunch of Christmas songs from the Internet and got the breakfast-munching audience to sing along. Good times.

The highlight of Christmas in Mysore was definitely the visit to a local children’s home. After hearing the Santosha breakfast sing-along, Aussie D asked me to come to the home where a bunch of yogis from the Shala volunteer.

We distributed Christmas gifts and sang with the kids. The sweetest, most awesome and super rambunctious kids! They totally took over “Jingle Bells” Bollywood-style. We jumped up and down, singing, jumping, dancing and rejoicing. Really good times!

I hope to remember the kids and their smiles and all the fun we had whenever I feel cranky. That should shut me up real fast. I am beyond lucky to be in Mysore and to experience everything around me. I am grateful for my family and friends back home. I am thrilled for my new friends in Mysore. That I am healthy enough to sing and practice yoga…just crazy awesome.

Christmas afternoon was spent lunching with Aussie D and other yogi friends at an outdoor buffet named Palm Springs where four middle aged Indian guys with a drum machine and incredibly out of tune electric guitars played and sang Christmas hits. The buffet had “Mexican” food. It was fun. And surreal.

On a slightly less surreal note, I got hit by a scooter a few days after Christmas. I was crossing the street to get to the supermarket and the scooter was trying to park in front of the same supermarket. The problem was that the scooter was approaching from behind me and the driver tried to speed past me to park. To be clear, I had no intention of parking my big ass in that spot. He didn’t speed enough I guess because he plowed into my right side. I was knocked over. In shock but all in one piece, I got up, checked for any broken body parts and finished crossing the street. He and his passenger were surprised as well and very apologetic. No worries, I said. It’s all good. They looked at me like I was a bionic woman regenerating body parts right then and there. I was lucky and got away with only bruises.

Now, only if I can grow a set of eyes on the back of my head, I would jaywalk so much more effectively!

I ended up a busy bee for the two weeks leading up to Christmas. So to save time, I got myself a miniature horse to ride around. Here she is parked in front of the shala.

Eh…just kidding.

But I have been very busy with additional classes and serendipitous obligations (all of them delightful, details on the next blog).

A few weeks ago, I went for an injury consultation with Noah McKenna (yoga
teacher, chiroprator, acupuncturist). I was so impressed with the results, I decided to take his anatomy course. It took up a big chunk of time every weekday afternoon for two weeks and was worth every minute. Aside from all the practical yoga anatomy, something he said stuck with me. One’s level in asana practice is not an indicator of one’s worth and values as a good human being.

Well, duh! Right? Think again. It’s so easy to forget the obvious in yoga, especially since asana practice is so heavily emphasized these days. How many people in New York choose their yoga teachers based on their physical appearance and asana-wow factor? How many for the life experience and spiritual knowledge? How many of your teachers talk about “juicy” poses? What the hell is a juicy pose for Krishna’s sake?!?!

My Sanskrit and philosophy teacher, Lakshmish, explained to us that the yogic texts frown upon blabbing about one’s yoga practice and marketing it. Be a student. Do your best with dedication regardless of end result (an important lesson from Bhagavad Gita).

My voice teacher in NY had asked me to keep singing even if I don’t get any work, because it’s so obvious to her that the act of singing makes me happy. It’s the not-getting-the-career-I-thought-I’d-have part that makes me unhappy. But that’s not singing, is it?

Do what you can to keep practicing, studying, singing. Forget the rest. The rest is all ego and naval-gazing. What I’m learning in yoga directly applies to my singing in the most fundamental way. If I love practicing yoga and singing, then that’s good enough to keep going. What other reason do I need? I am humbled daily here, and gladly so.

Puppies update

Spotty (of the 7 puppies) and Snow (of the 5 puppies) have been kicked out of their dens. They had hid their babies in and around the yard of an empty house. I guess the landlord didn’t appreciate all the yoga students coming around to feed the dogs. The dogs had moved to a dranage ditch shortly after the landlord came back to check on the property. By then, the total number of the puppies had dwindled to 3. One was run over by a scooter early on and the rest were taken one by one by the locals.

I really hope they are well taken care of. I’m really conflicted about how they treat the dogs here. I heard that a couple of years ago, a local neighbor was not happy with the yoga students, so he poisoned and killed a stray which the students loved. A whole bunch of students helplessly watched the dog die.

As of Christmas, only 1 of Snow’s pups was left. I feel so sad for the forlorn mommies. Spotty looked lonely and sad after all her babies were taken away (way too early!). I miss them, yet hope they will remain house pets, off the streets, and well loved.

On a happier note, Shiva’s pug had 4 squirming puppies. I almost fainted at their stupendous cuteness.

Shiva is the problem-solver extraordinaire for the yoga students, arranging apartments, transportation and other living arrangements. He is also an animal lover. Those pups will be well taken care of. Yay!
